Florida is making its fifth attempt to legalize recreational marijuana with a ballot initiative, attracting more financial support than any previous effort. If the measure passes the required 60 percent supermajority, Florida would become the 17th state or territory to legalize recreational marijuana by ballot measure.

The committee behind this push, Smart & Safe Florida, has broken fundraising records, raising over $40 million so far. This surpasses the previous record held by California’s Proposition 64, which raised $36.7 million in 2016. With the election still about five months away, Smart & Safe Florida is now the most-funded measure of 2024.
